Just Say Yes to Fruits & Vegetables

What is Just Say Yes?

Just Say Yes to Fruits and Vegetables (JSY) is a Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-Ed) project dedicated to improving the health and nutritional status of low-income families in New York.  The Just Say Yes project has been in existence for over 15 years, but experienced a restructuring during 2012 resulting in a more direct relationship with the 8 regional Food Banks across the state of New York.  The local impact of this change is that the Food Bank For New York City received grant funds from the USDA and the New York State Department of Health for three JSY nutritionist positions housed at our offices to cover these needs throughout the 5 boroughs.

More Good News

You may have already heard of Just Say Yes or even hosted one of their workshops in the past.  The JSY nutritionists collaborate with contacts at Emergency Food Relief Organizations like food pantries and soup kitchens to provide healthy eating workshops for clients visiting these sites.   Each workshop provides practical nutrition information in a way that is fun and easy to understand with interactive discussions and healthy recipe demonstrations using ingredients commonly received from a food pantry.

Is your agency a good fit?

These outreach efforts are free of charge, but there are a few expectations for workshops to be successful.  A host sites need to:
    •    Set aside 30-40 minutes of mostly uninterrupted time for the session to take place – one hour is truly best, if this is at all possible.
    •    Recruit a minimum of 10 clients to attend the entire session. Groups larger than this are encouraged as most JSY recipes serve 20-25 taste samples.
    •    Provide a space for the workshop to take place with a table and enough chairs for the individuals who will be participating.
    •    Arrange for a translator if the population served by your site will not understand an English presentation.
The JSY nutritionist visiting will do everything else - all of the materials and supplies needed for the class and recipe demonstration, including the ingredients, are provided!
For information about scheduling or other questions you may have, please contact the JSY Nutritionist in your area.
