With knowledge gained from a Food Bank workshop, SAGE converted its pantry to a “client choice” pantry, enabling clients to select their own food as they would in a supermarket setting.
June 30, 2015 – As we reflect on a particularly momentous Pride Week, Food Bank For New York City is proud to serve all New Yorkers. Our network of charities reaches diverse communities all across the city, and two in particular are serving the specific needs of our LGBT neighbors struggling to put food on the table. Both Services and Advocacy for LGBT Elders (SAGE) and Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC) offer hot meals, food pantries, benefits assistance, employment assistance, health services, counseling and support groups, nutrition education, social activities and much more.
With its special focus on LGBT seniors, SAGE addresses a growing demand for services tailored to an older population, while GMHC leads the way in HIV/AIDS prevention, care and advocacy. As part of Food Bank’s larger network, these two charities are helping to ensure that 1.5 million vulnerable New Yorkers get the emergency food and services they need.
