November 6, 2015 – Last night dozens of supporters, charity leaders and Food Bank clients joined us for the opening of Hidden In Plain Sight: Portraits of Hunger in NYC, an exhibition of photographs by photojournalist Joey O’Loughlin, co-presented by Food Bank For New York City and Brooklyn Historical Society. Food Bank President and CEO Margarette Purvis was joined by Deborah Schwartz, President of Brooklyn Historical Society, and Joey O’Loughlin in welcoming attendees to the evening’s event.
As guests made their way through the exhibition, powerful images and interactive audio kiosks revealed the rarely-seen humanity behind poverty and hunger. Ms. O’Loughlin spent nearly three years chronicling and capturing glimpses into the lives of struggling New Yorkers who rely on Food Bank’s citywide network of food pantries.
In sharing the stories of our neighbors in need and the pantries that serve as their lifeline, this exhibition takes viewers on a journey from the pantry line to the home pantry. More than raising awareness about hunger in our city, this important exhibition will hopefully inspire action and advocacy on behalf of everyday New Yorkers struggling to put food on the table.
