June 23, 2015 – Late last Fall, we learned that students at P.S. 229 in the Bronx were in desperate need of food assistance. Many of the school’s parents live in shelters, and students were arriving for school hungry and unable to focus on their schoolwork.
Food Bank’s Nutrition Education and Member Services teams worked together to set up an in-school Campus Pantry program in just a few weeks. Having a food pantry inside the school has been life-changing for so many of its participants, helping these families save much-needed money in their budgets.
A parent wrote to us: “I cannot thank you enough for the amazing help that you provide for me and my kids with the food pantry. The food you give me helps to ease my financial problems. And I have to say that my girls are now eating healthier, all thanks to your generosity.”
Another had this to say: “I have worked all my life and supported my family with little to no help from public service programs. Two months ago I lost my job, and the food that you provide helps me save cash and make payments against balance arrears. Your gift makes a real difference in the lives of struggling families.”
Food Bank is proud to help the nearly 300 children, adults, and seniors who have used the pantry since it opened. Thank you to our donors and partners who make it possible!
