Standing for Emergency Food

May 5, 2016 – Community leaders, emergency food providers and anti-hunger advocates rallied on the steps of City Hall for increasing funding the Emergency Food Assistance Program.

May 5, 2016 – Community leaders, emergency food providers and anti-hunger advocates from across the City rallied on the steps of City Hall for increasing funding for EFAP, NYC’s Emergency Food Assistance Program. Food Bank For New York City was proud to join those New Yorkers and stand in unity with the City Council in calling for increased investment in EFAP to $22 million in the FY17 City Budget.

EFAP helps provide nutritious food to approximately 500 emergency food providers throughout NYC. Current funding proposal for EFAP in the Executive Budget is insufficient: 16 percent of New Yorkers rely on emergency food, yet the Executive Budget proposes spending only 0.01% of the City budget on emergency food. No New Yorker should go to bed hungry and the City must invest in EFAP to support programs that serve our neighbors in need every day.

Thank you to Council Member Stephen Levin, Chair of the General Welfare Committee, and Council Member Barry Grodenchik for cohosting the event, as well Council Members Cohen, Eugene, Garodnick, Gentile, Gibson, Greenfield, Johnson, Kallos, Lander, Levine, Menchaca, Salamanca, and Treyger for joining the #EFAPHelps Rally & Press Conference, and for showing their support for food pantries and soup kitchens across the city.

See the photos of the Rally and Press Conference below, then join the #EFAPHelps campaign to support emergency food in NYC today!
